INDUSTRY WK 5: Independent Artists / Sole Traders

Many artists today operate as independent workers or sole traders, managing their own creative practice as both artists and small business owners. Rather than relying on large galleries, artists often organise their own exhibitions and projects. This approach offers creative freedom, but it also requires artists to develop professional skills in areas such as marketing and financial management.
Working independently means balancing creative work with administrative tasks. Artists must manage their own promotion, apply for opportunities, maintain websites and social media, and build relationships with smaller galleries and people. In many ways, being an independent artist involves combining artistic practice with entrepreneurship.
At the same time, the growth of digital platforms has made it easier for artists to present and distribute their work. Social media, online galleries, streaming services, and independent publishing platforms allow artists to reach audiences without relying entirely on traditional institutions. However, this also creates a highly competitive environment where artists must constantly work to maintain visibility and engagement.
Building a sustainable career as an artist often means developing multiple income streams rather than relying on a single source of income. These can include selling artworks, commissions, teaching workshops, grants, residencies, licensing photographs, or working in related creative industries. Artists need to learn how to manage finances and maintain professional networks.
The reality is that many artists face unstable income and irregular opportunities. While independence provides freedom, it can also create financial pressure and uncertainty. As a result, many artists combine their personal practice with part-time work or other professional roles within the creative industries.
Networking is an important factor in building a career in the creative industries. Industry contacts can lead to collaborations, exhibitions, commissions, and career development opportunities.
Artists often build networks through:
attending exhibition openings and artist talks
participating in residencies or workshops
collaborating with other artists
connecting through online platforms and social media
These relationships are often built gradually over time. Rather than focusing only on promotion, successful networking often involves genuine conversations, shared interests, and mutual support within creative communities.
Networking can also be challenging, especially for emerging and introverted artists who may feel unsure about approaching professionals in the industry, where such social settings can cause anxiety. This highlights the importance of community-driven initiatives such as artist run spaces, which provide supportive environments where artists can meet, collaborate, and develop their practice together.
Examples of some great Australian ARIs:
Tiles Lewisham is an artist-run initiative designed to support early-career artists by providing affordable studio and exhibition spaces. The organisation aims to connect with the wider Sydney arts community through a varied exhibition program, as well as workshops and residencies focused on printmaking.
Seventh Gallery is an artist-run initiative based in Melbourne that supports emerging and early-career artists by providing exhibition opportunities and professional development. The gallery is run by artists and focuses on experimental and contemporary practices, often presenting projects that explore new ideas, materials, and collaborative approaches. By offering accessible exhibition space and a supportive environment, Seventh Gallery helps artists gain experience presenting their work publicly and connecting with the broader arts community.
Firstdraft is an artist-run initiative based in Sydney that supports emerging and early-career artists through exhibitions, studio programs, and professional development opportunities. Established in 1986, it has become one of Australia’s longest-running and most influential artist-run spaces. Firstdraft provides a platform for artists to present experimental and contemporary work, often giving them their first opportunity to exhibit in a professional gallery setting. The organisation is committed to supporting diverse voices and encourages innovative practices across different media, including installation, performance, video, and painting.
Bus Projects is an artist-run initiative in Melbourne that supports emerging and early-career artists by providing opportunities to exhibit and experiment with new ideas. The organisation focuses on contemporary art and encourages artists to explore different mediums, installation, and collaborative projects. It offers exhibition space and professional development opportunities, allowing artists to present work outside traditional commercial gallery systems.
