MELANIE MEGGS

I am an Australian interdisciplinary artist, creative director, writer, and publisher based in Newcastle, New South Wales. My practice moves across photography, printmaking, painting, digital media, and installation, with each medium selected in response to the conceptual and material demands of the work. Photography frequently operates as my initial mode of observation, while experimentation with surface, scale, process, and spatial presentation allows the image to extend beyond the frame and occupy physical space.
My work examines how experience is formed through the body, memory, movement, and place. Drawing from personal experience, I explore broader questions of identity, vulnerability, belonging, cultural memory, and the social structures through which bodies and lives are interpreted. I am particularly interested in the unstable thresholds between presence and absence, visibility and concealment, control and uncertainty.
Material experimentation is central to my methodology. Through layering, repetition, fragmentation, and interdisciplinary processes, I approach making as a form of research. Rather than resolving contradiction, I allow uncertainty to remain active within the work, creating space for personal knowledge to be examined, disrupted, and transformed.
Alongside my studio practice, I am Co-Founder and Creative Director of the not for profit organisations - Pictorial Foundation and The Pictorial List Inc. Through these artist-led platforms, I co-develop exhibitions, publishing initiatives, professional opportunities, and cross-cultural programs that support equitable access to the arts. Working between Newcastle and New York, my broader practice seeks to advance transnational exchange, artist mobility, collaborative research, and sustainable professional development.
