T4: WORKSHOP WEEK 1

Following Andy's demonstration how objects can generate meaning through grouping and arrangement, we undertook a group exercise using a similar framework. In small groups, we were given a selection of objects to choose from and asked to construct an inferred narrative. The task required interpretive decision making. The process revealed how quickly meaning can shift depending on placement and omission. It also highlighted that collaborative interpretation introduces multiple readings, reinforcing that narrative construction is contingent and negotiated.

Mask (my selection)
Concealment
Constructed identity
Performance
Emotional shielding
Persona
Distance between inner and outer self
The mask operates as visible concealment. It suggests a curated identity presented to others. It hides vulnerability while simultaneously drawing attention to the act of hiding.
Castle (Tracey)
Defence
Fortification
Boundaries
Isolation
Emotional walls
Protection from intrusion
The castle symbolises structural concealment. It represents building barriers rather than wearing disguise. It suggests retreat into safety and control.
Folded Letter (Indi)
Hidden communication
Withheld truth
Indirect expression
Silence through language
Avoidance
Suppressed message
The folded letter introduces concealment through words. The message exists but is not openly shared. It becomes a device for hiding behind text rather than speaking directly.
Bowling Pin
Target
Impact
Collapse
Chain reaction
Instability
Consequences
The bowling pin suggests inevitability. It is designed to be struck. It represents the moment when defences are tested. Once hit, it does not fall alone. It implies that one action can trigger multiple consequences.
Our narrative of hiding behind messages, walls, and masks is reinforced by three objects that signify layered concealment: identity, structure, and communication.
The bowling pin functions as the structural catalyst. It represents the moment of impact that disrupts concealment. When struck, it initiates collapse. Unlike the other objects, which preserve distance, the bowling pin anticipates confrontation.
The composition therefore reads as psychological architecture under pressure. The mask hides the self. The castle protects the interior. The letter obscures truth. The bowling pin foreshadows the event that exposes what has been concealed.
Concealment can only hold until something strikes.
